Alamo.nl shares 10 tips for a family road trip

As a parent, you've probably experienced it: crying or arguing children in the back seat of your car. Or having to answer the question "Are we there yet?" hundreds of times. Still, a rental car offers the freedom to go wherever you want, which is why many families choose to travel by car. Are you planning to hit the road soon with the whole family in a rental car from Alamo.nl? We've put together a number of tips to help your holiday start the moment you get in the car.

1. Sing-along fun

Bring out your inner DJ and create a fun playlist with songs your kids love. Have slightly older children? Take it a step further and bring printed and bound song lyrics.

2. Top 10 lists

Bring books about your destination and read to your children. This way, they'll learn more about the country you're visiting. You can also create a top 10 list of must-do activities together.

3. Who am I?

We all know the classic game "Who am I?". This travel version is based on that idea. One person writes down the name of a famous person or an object, and the others have to guess who or what it is by asking questions. The answers can only be "yes" or "no".

4. Spot the license plates

We've all done this as kids during long car rides: spotting foreign license plates. Turn it into a game and try to count as many as possible. It's simple and will keep your kids entertained for quite a while.

5. Scavenger hunt

Kids love scavenger hunts. Give them a list of things to "find" along the way from your Alamo rental car. They can use a tablet, phone, or camera to capture what they see.

6. Sweet or sour

It's very simple: wave to other drivers or motorcyclists. If they wave back, they're "sweet". If they don't, they're "sour".

7. Fun pack

Create a travel pack with colouring books, crayons, stickers, cards, etc., and give it to your children when you get in the car.

8. Tablet games

Bring a tablet and make sure it's loaded with enough (educational) games and videos. Examples include EduMe, Letterschool, and apps from Juf Jannie. Of course, games like Angry Birds and Leap Sheep are always a hit too.

9. Audiobooks

Bring along several audiobooks and play them in the car. This is relaxing for both parents and children.

10. Mini-Fun

Kids love small snacks. Prepare little bags with grapes, crackers, baby carrots, or cubes of cheese and hand them out every couple of hours.

Happy kids, happy parents. Keeping children as content as possible is key. With the right preparation, a bit of patience, and a sense of adventure, a road trip is the perfect way to travel with young children.
