5 hidden gems in Scandinavia
Scandinavia is a favorite destination among many of our colleagues – and we totally get why! The landscape is stunning and so different from the Netherlands: from dramatic coastlines and fjords to lava fields and pine forests. Plus, a summer holiday here is nothing like a winter stay – each season has its own charm. In this blog, we’re sharing five personal routes and favorite spots in Norway, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, and Denmark.
1. Norway’s Islands
Many travelers heading to Norway choose the famous Lofoten Islands, but just a little further north lies Senja – the Lofoten’s quieter little brother. This island is just as spectacular but far less crowded. The coastal drive between Gryllefjord and Botnhamn is absolutely breathtaking. Be cautious though – some of the mountain roads are narrow, but the fjord views make it all worthwhile. And with a rental car, you're flexible: stop for a photo, stretch your legs, or enjoy a picnic whenever it suits you.

2. Magical winter in Finland
In eastern Finland, near the Russian border, you'll find Kuusamo – a pristine region full of lakes, pine forests, and reindeer. Our colleague Rianne stayed in a cozy log cabin there, far from the hustle and bustle. While the area is great for winter sports, it’s also a paradise for nature lovers. In Riisitunturi National Park, the snow transforms the pine trees into a true winter wonderland. The snow-covered branches bend under the weight, creating a surreal, magical landscape. And if the conditions are right (dark skies, no clouds, and strong solar activity), you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights!
Good to know: Roads in Finland and the other Scandinavian countries are well-maintained during winter. Rental cars are equipped with winter tires (often studded), so you can drive safely and worry-free.

3. Sweden's wilderness
Close to the Norwegian border in Sweden lies a breathtaking 500-kilometer route known as the Vildmarksvägen – or the Wilderness Road. It truly lives up to its name. The road takes you deep into untouched nature, far from civilization. It’s not unusual to drive for an hour without seeing another car. Along the way, you might spot reindeer, moose, brown bears, wolves, and rare birds. The Vildmarksvägen is only accessible from June through October – outside those months, heavy snowfall makes the route impassable. But during summer, this is one of the most beautiful and adventurous drives you can take in Scandinavia.

4. Iceland's Westfjords
Just a three-hour flight from the Netherlands, Iceland is a land of striking contrasts – fiery volcanoes and icy glaciers. Most visitors stay in the southwest and follow the famous Golden Circle route with its many highlights. While that area is beautiful, the farther you travel from Reykjavik, the more unspoiled the landscape becomes. If your itinerary allows, venture deeper into the country. The Westfjords are a hidden gem: remote gravel roads, cliffs full of puffins, and natural hot springs. The absolute highlight according to our colleague Rianne? The magnificent Dynjandi waterfall, a wide cascade that flows down the cliff in spectacular steps.

5. A scenic loop through Denmark
The Marguerite Route is a 3500 km scenic route that winds past castles, coastlines, and charming villages – places you’d miss if you stuck to the highways. You don’t have to drive the entire route; just pick a stretch to follow during your trip. It’s easy to spot, marked with signs featuring a daisy flower. Traveling with kids, like our colleague Stigne during a family visit? Then Egeskov Castle is a must: a fairytale castle in a beautiful park where both children and adults can enjoy hours of fun.

Why a rental car makes all the difference
Have these Scandinavian countries been on your bucket list for a while? Now’s the time to go! A rental car will make your trip to Scandinavia complete.
