Visit national parks such as Koli or Nuuksio for fresh air and endless silence
Plan your own trip and decide your route without relying on tours or public transport
Finland’s main roads are very well maintained. Even in the middle of winter, they are surprisingly drivable and often largely free of snow. On smaller roads, snow may accumulate more, but road markings usually remain visible. To drive safely and comfortably in these conditions, it helps to keep a few things in mind:
Winter-ready driving: In winter, all rental cars come equipped with winter tyres, often with studs. This gives you optimal grip, even off the main roads.
Drive calmly and smoothly: Avoid sudden braking or steering. Keep a safe distance — icy patches can be deceptive.
Warm up the car: When temperatures drop below –10°C, it’s a good idea to let the engine idle briefly. This gives oil and tyres time to warm up.
Watch for reindeer: In Lapland, reindeer roam freely, especially around dusk. If you see a warning sign, reduce your speed. Reindeer can cross suddenly and always have the right of way.
Always drive with lights on: In Finland, headlights are required even during the day — important when daylight hours are short.
Plan your route wisely: Outside the major towns, distances can be long and petrol stations scarce. Refuel in time.
Be ready for the unexpected: In case of delays, it’s wise to bring extra layers of clothing, a thermos or some snacks. Temperatures can drop significantly.
One-way car rental in Finland
It’s often possible to return your rental car at a different location than where you picked it up. Ideal if you want to start in Helsinki and finish your journey in Rovaniemi or Kuopio. Any fees will be shown in advance, so you won’t be caught off guard.
