Albania and North Macedonia: the undiscovered gems of Europe

The Southern European countries Albania and North Macedonia are becoming increasingly popular for a road trip — and we completely understand why! In both countries you’ll find mountains, sea, authentic UNESCO towns and delicious food, and the local people are incredibly hospitable. Due to the unique history of both nations, there are many fascinating historical and cultural sights to explore. Influenced by both Balkan and Mediterranean cultures, the distinct languages and traditions of Albania and North Macedonia have developed over time. In addition, both countries are still relatively undiscovered, very affordable, and perfectly suited for a road trip with a rental car.

Beautiful and untouched Albania

Upon arrival at Tirana Airport, you can pick up your car either at the airport or at a downtown location and immediately start your road trip through Albania. Along the coast you’ll find beautiful sandy beaches and stunning bays, while the inland areas are rugged and untouched. Throughout the country you’ll come across authentic villages and Roman ruins, as well as the Albanian Alps. In Tirana, the capital of Albania, you can enjoy strolling along the boulevard, and the country’s second city, Durrës, is a beautiful port city on the Adriatic Sea. Did you know that the historic city centers of Gjirokastër and Berat are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites? The Greek-Roman ruins of Butrint were already on the list before them. Be sure to also visit one of the fourteen nature reserves and the Blue Eye, a spectacular natural spring with crystal-clear blue water.

One-ways and crossing the border in Albania

It is possible to cross the border from Albania with your rental car, giving you the unique opportunity to explore both beautiful Albania and its neighboring countries. Please take note of the following points if you plan to cross the border with your rental car:

  • After completing your booking, you must contact the local rental company. Their contact details can be found on the voucher you receive. They will provide you with a so-called Green Card, which covers the rental with international third-party liability insurance (T.P.I.).
  • The cost for this Green Card is € 40 excluding VAT, payable locally.
  • Roadside assistance or a replacement car cannot be arranged outside Albania.

You also have the option to use a one-way rental, meaning you return the car at a different location than where you picked it up. You can return the car at another location within Albania without extra charges as long as the pick-up and drop-off points are within a 40-kilometer radius. If the distance is greater, a fee of €120 will be charged. An international one-way option is also available upon request, allowing you to return the car in another country. For such an international one-way, a drop-off fee applies. If you are planning an international one-way rental, we recommend mentioning this when making your booking.

Historic and nature-rich North Macedonia

Via the stunning Lake Ohrid, which lies on the border, you can easily travel from Albania to North Macedonia. North Macedonia is a country full of history, folklore and nature. Outdoor enthusiasts will also feel right at home here, as the mountains and lakes of Ohrid, Prespa and Dojran are perfect for hiking, swimming and cycling. The capital of North Macedonia is Skopje, and it is definitely worth a visit! North Macedonia is also known for its excellent wines, and you can even stay at several wineries. Our tip? Spend a night in Demir Kapija, a town home to the oldest winery in the Balkans.

One-ways and crossing the border in North Macedonia

You can also start your road trip in North Macedonia with your rental car. Crossing the border is possible here as well, but the following points are important:

  • After completing your booking, you must contact the local rental company. Their contact details can be found on the voucher you receive.
  • When crossing the border, it is mandatory to take out third-party liability insurance (TPI) for countries outside North Macedonia. The cost for this required insurance is €35.40 including VAT and must be paid locally.
  • Roadside assistance or a replacement car cannot be arranged outside North Macedonia.

Would you like to return the car at a different location than where you started? This is available on request at specific locations within North Macedonia. Such a one-way rental must be requested at the time of booking with the local rental company. The cost is €59 including VAT, excluding airport tax, and must be paid locally.

If you plan to return your rental car outside North Macedonia, an international one-way can be arranged upon request. Several drop-off locations are available, each with specific fees that must be paid locally. To arrange your (international) one-way rental, please contact the local rental company.
