Discover the Dolomites in Northern Italy

The richly coloured mountain range in the north of Italy is truly breathtaking. Around 250 million years ago, this area was an ancient sea. The mountains were formed from coral reefs that once grew here and were pushed upwards over time. The pink-red and golden-yellow colours are especially visible during sunrise and sunset. The rugged rock formations create a beautiful contrast with green alpine meadows.

Rent your car via Alamo.nl and explore the spectacular mountain passes with crystal-clear lakes, towering peaks and vast glaciers in the surrounding area.

Routes in the Dolomites

The routes in the Dolomites consist of high mountain passes with many hairpin bends. The scenery changes constantly along the way. The Stelvio Pass is the second-highest paved mountain pass in the Alps and offers a spectacular drive. Even in summer, you can bring your skis, as there is a small ski area at the top where snow can be found year-round.

Another beautiful mountain route is the Strada delle Dolomiti. This 100-kilometre route runs along steep and rugged mountain peaks in a stunning landscape.

Did you know?

The names Alps and Dolomites are often used interchangeably. This is because the Dolomites are officially part of the Southern Alps and are located in Northern Italy, which can sometimes cause confusion. Wherever you go, you will see two names: an Italian and a German one.

This is because South Tyrol was part of the Duchy of Bavaria from the early Middle Ages and later belonged to the Habsburg Empire. It only became part of Italy after the First World War. That is why both Italian and German are still spoken in the region today.
